Medical debt may disproportionately impact credit scores

Readers in Michigan are fully aware that health care costs are high and will only continue to rise. In 2011 alone, Americans paid $307.7 billion in health care costs. Thousands are drawing from their own pockets -- even if they have some health insurance coverage -- to get the care they need. As a result, many people are feeling the effects of incurring large amounts of medical debt.

Young consumers now carry less credit card debt

Over the course of the most recent economic recession, a number of financially distressed families used their credit card as a means to cover bills and other basic expenses. As this type of debt stacked up alongside other debts, personal bankruptcy became the best-available option for debt relief in many cases.

Warwick tells IRS to 'walk on by' in Chapter 7 bankruptcy case

In March 2013, legendary soul singer Dionne Warwick sought Chapter 7 bankruptcy largely as the result of tax debts that accumulated over the years. In total, the Internal Revenue claims that Warwick owes nearly $7 million in unpaid federal taxes. Under some circumstances, tax debt can't be discharged in personal bankruptcy, and it may be a possible in this case.

Detroit's financial woes persist; bankruptcy is still an option

For the last several years, the city of Detroit has been going through serious financial trouble. Since we last discussed the long-term debt issues faced by multiple Michigan cities, the state has taken over Detroit and its finances. At this time, the city hasn't officially filed bankruptcy, but some officials are preparing for the possibility.
