Hospitals turn to no-interest payment plans for patients

Think about the last time you got a bill from your doctor or hospital. Even if you have great insurance coverage, the initial cost was probably very high. Today, as insurance changes and more cost is being moved to patients, more and more people in Detroit are feeling the financial burden of going to a doctor. Even a short office visit for a minor problem could result in a bill for hundreds of dollars. It's no secret, then, that hospitals are having even more trouble collecting payments from patients.

Detroit residents speak out in court on bankruptcy process

In a somewhat unprecedented hearing this week, Detroit residents had an opportunity to speak before the city's bankruptcy judge to air their concerns about the Chapter 9 bankruptcy filing recently made by the city. Many of the speakers argued against the city's filing and asked that it not go forwarding, citing issues like pension benefits that would impact thousands of hard working residents.

Public service repayment plans help relieve student loan debt

Many different factors have contributing to the rising level of student loan debt in the United States today. The rising cost of higher education paried with a downturned economy put many who were in school at the start of the recession in a bad financial position when the graduated and the economy was losing jobs.

Medical debt contributes to rising number of bankruptcies

Any Michigan family who has been through a serious illness or has had someone suffer from an injury from an accident is familiar with the ways that medical bills can start to pile up. At first, for those who have health insurance they may seem manageable or there may be hope that the policy will cover the larger expenses. unfortunately sometimes a policy does not cover big costs because of a loophole or sometimes the person did not have insurance coverage at the time of the injury or illness.
