Why bankruptcy might be the most responsible choice

Declaring bankruptcy has gotten a bad reputation in recent years as a way for people who have spent too much to get out of their debt. While it is certainly true sometimes that individuals borrow too much to spend on non-essential expenses and wind up having to declare bankruptcy, it is more often a matter of having lost a job or other source of income that makes it hard to pay even the most basic bills. When this situation arises, declaring bankruptcy is actually often the most responsible choice since it puts creditors on notice of the issue and helps create a plan to pay back portions of debt that are more manageable.

Medical credit cards take advantage of vulnerable borrowers

Imagine sitting in the chair at the dentists office and being told you need a costly procedure to remove unhealthy teeth or repair damaged dental work. Now imagine that the procedure you need is not covered by insurance and is otherwise unaffordable. Enter the medical credit card, a way of paying for dental work and other procedures with a line of credit. Now imagine that this credit card is pitched to you by your doctor.

Payday lenders under scrutiny for lending practices

Many Michigan residents are familiar with the idea of a payday loan, since many have used this type of loan to pay for an unexpected large expense. These loans can be very helpful since they are considerably easier to get than other types of personal loans and they do not require any collateral. And, unlike a credit card, payday loans are still available to those who have a low credit rating.

Aggressive debt collectors fined $1 million

Menacing text messages and threatening phone calls led to a Federal Trade Commission investigation into a company called the National Attorney Service. In the first case to deal directly with unlawful text messages being sent by a debt collector, the FTC fined the company $1 million for violating debt collection regulations.
