Too many "debt relief" companies not helpful

It is an emotionally draining and stressful experience to be over your head in debt. Unfortunately, many in this position in Michigan start to receive numerous solicitations from companies promising debt relief. Far too many of them seem to only be interested in maximizing their own profit rather than really working out a solution that works for you and gets you out from under your debt.

Activist groups buy medical debt, forgives it

A lot of Michigan readers are already familiar with the activist movement Occupy Wall Street. Less well known is the off-shoot group Strike Debt, aimed specifically at advocating for consumers and borrowers struggling with debt. One project of this group has been to buy consumer debt from credit companies in the same way that a debt collection firm would, for pennies on the dollar.

Card Act shows positive results for borrowers

Some Michigan readers might remember hearing about a law called the Card Act which was a part of efforts that lawmakers undertook to adjust the financial system to be more friendly to borrowers. Under this law, credit card companies are limited in the types of fees that they can charge to customers and limited the ability of banks to raise the interest rate or change other terms without warning.

Debt collectors under scrutiny from consumer protection agency

Regulators at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau have released information about some proposed new limits on debt collection practices. The new limits are still about a year away from becoming law, but the proposals signal action on the increasing problem of aggressive and unfair debt collection practices that impact so many Americans. In fact, one in ten Americans hold past-due debt at an average amount of $1,400.
