Michigan woman files for bankruptcy after getting conned

There are any number of unexpected life changes that can spell financial trouble for Michigan consumers. Unemployment and medical expenses are two very common situations that can result in financial distress, but there are many more. One can be a little embarrassing, but it affects lots of people.

Sometimes people will loan money to friends or relatives as a favor, but are left in a tight spot if the borrower fails to repay the money. Occasionally, a friend or relative will tell lies in order to separate someone from their money. This unfortunate scenario played out in Michigan recently. 19 people were swindled by an unscrupulous ex-con.

The 19 people were all women who had entered into what they thought were friendships or romantic relationships with the 34-year-old man. They all lent money to him, and all lost the money they gave him. The man was charged with obtaining money under false pretenses. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to nine to 32 years in prison and ordered to pay restitution of $160,880.

One of the man's victims told her story. She incurred $50,000 worth of debt dealing with the man. She ended up having to file for bankruptcy after the debt load threatened her ownership of her home and automobile. Although the man said he was sorry for the troubles he caused his victims, this victim was not impressed with his statement.

These victims are by no means the only smart, successful people taken in by grifters or deadbeats. These kinds of occurrences increase in frequency as the economy sours as it did several years ago. Many people get taken in. Consumer bankruptcy may be an option for many of these people.
